The couple farmed northeast of Platte, South Dakota for 47 years, retiring in 1995. Melvin served on the Forbes Township Board for several years and was a member of the American Legion for 44 years. Melvin died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Beverly Health Care Center in Armour, South Dakota. He was survived by his wife Ruby; eight children: Robert and wife Sarah, Platte, South Dakota, Ruth Lucas and husband Paul, Academy, South Dakota, Mary Mehyerink and husband Dave, Platte, South Dakota, Donna Boysen and husband Terry, Platte, South Dakota, David and wife Terry, Platte, South Dakota, Lorna BaanHofman and husband Delwyn, Lamar, Colorado, Jelene Olsen, Canistota, South Dakota, Brenda Martin and husband Byron Jr., Mitchell, South Dakota; twenty-five granchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
