Sabers was born January 3, 1915 at Salem, SD to William and Anna Osterhaus Sabers. He grew up in Salem and attended St. Mary's school there. He married Ida Duxbury at St. Mary's in Salem on February 4, 1936. He farmed northeast of Salem until March of 1948 when he moved into Salem where he operated the dray line for three years. he worked as a gas station attendant for the next 13 years at Pleasant Acres and Stanley Corner. He owned and operated the Salem Café in 1964 and 1965. After that he worked four years at Paramount Pipe Company in Spencer, and then was employed at Feterl Manufacturing in Salem until retiring in 1977. He and his wife wintered in Southern California for many years after retiring. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic church in Salem, SD. Melvin passed away June 19, 2000 at Beverly Healthcare Center in Salem, SD where he had been a resident for a few days. Survivors include his wife, Ida, of Salem, SD; his children, Joyce and her husband Tom Supik of Sioux Falls, SD; Sharon and her husband Larry Jensen of Spearfish, SD; Allen Sabers and his wife Karen of Garretson, SD; and Phyllis and her husband Roger Huls of Salem, SD. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one brother, Willard Sabers of Riverside, California; and one sister, Marcella Koepke of Mitchell, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Alfred, Elmer, Edgar, Gilbert, and Gerald; four sisters, Leona, Esther, Muriel, and Elvira; and one great granddaughter, Lacey.
