Read More	Melvin (Mel) Theodore Ackerman was born to Theodore H. and Christina (Klein) Ackerman, August 28, 1923, in Sutton. He passed away on March 20, 2008, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 84 years, six months and 21 days. He was one of seven children in the family. Melvin grew up in rural Grafton. He attended school at a country school in rural Sutton. He farmed wit his father after leaving school and spent much of his free time driving back and forth between Sutton and Fairmont where he was courting Maxine Marie Lovegrove. Mel was married to Maxine on August 12, 1945, and to them one child, Melvin E. (Gene) Ackerman was born. Mel and Maxine lived outside of Farimont where Mel farmed. Mel continued to farm and moved the family into Fairmont in 1971. Mel later opened Mel's Tire Shop, which he operated for 30 years until December of 2007. In addition to Mel's occupations as a farmer and tire shop owner, he was a city council member, drove a school bus for Fairmont Public School for 23 years and was a Chamber of Commerce member for 27 years. Mel was also a member of the Fairmont Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years which is the longest consecutive years of service for any member of the department. Mel enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also had a great passion for many sports teams which included the Huskers, Denver Broncos, Chicago Cubs, and several NASCAR teams. He was a faithful member of the Fairmont Community Methodist Church and served his church in a number of capacities. Throughout the years Mel was involved in stock car racing, was an avid bowler and loved to sit down to play a good game of cards. Mel will long be remembered for his big smile, sense of humor and the ability to carry on a long conversation about any topic. He is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Christina Ackerman; his wife, Maxine and his son, Gene; brothers, Theodore, Darvin and Raymond; sister, Margaret. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Alana Ackerman of Fairmont; brother, Wilbert and wife Nellie of Hastings; brother, Reinhart and wife Elaine of Juniata; grandchildren, Heather Schilke of Kearney; Jason Ackerman and wife Tanya of Omaha; and Korey Ackerman of Irving, Texas; great-grandchildren, Joshua Brown, Jaiden and Ty Scilke, Cael and Berke Ackerman. Funeral services were held on March 24, at Farimont Community Church with the Rev. Ra Drake officiating. The Chancel Choir sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Casket bearers were nephews Larry Ackerman, Lonnie Ackerman, Ronald Ackerman, Robert Rasmussen, Carl Ackerman; and family friends, Dick Fraiser, Dick Arbuck and Dave Bristol. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fairmont Volunteer Firefighters. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery.
