Melvin was born September 28, 1929 at Holdrege, Nebraska, the third of five children born to Edwin and Elma (Kearns) Johnston. Melvin received his primary education at Atlanta, Nebraska and then graduated from Mascot High School with the class of 1947. He then pursued higher education at Lincoln, Nebraska, where he studied business. Read More	Melvin William Johnston, 79 years of age, of Oxford, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. Melvin was born September 28, 1929 at Holdrege, Nebraska, the third of five children born to Edwin and Elma (Kearns) Johnston. Melvin received his primary education at Atlanta, Nebraska and then graduated from Mascot High School with the class of 1947. He then pursued higher education at Lincoln, Nebraska, where he studied business. Following his education, Melvin returned to Phelps County, where he began his career as a Parts man and was employed throughout the years at Robinson Motors and then Dannull Engine in Holdrege until his retirement in 2008 after over forty years of service. On October 27, 1973 he was united in marriage to Karen Marty at Oxford. With this marriage Melvin lovingly accepted Karen's four daughters and one son into his life. Following retirement he enjoyed playing cards with his friends and traveling with his wife, Karen. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oxford, member of the Tehama Shrine Band, had combined membership of the Masonic Lodge in Arapahoe, Nebraska and the Jachin Lodge #146 A.F. & A.M. of Holdrege. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Karen of Oxford; four step-daughters: JoAnn Pickering and her husband, Dale of Hastings, Barbara Khechfe and her husband, Abbas of Lincoln, Nebraska, Diane Linnemeyer and her husband, Gary of Lincoln and Donna Klintworth and her husband, Ted of Bloomfield, Nebraska; one step-son, Charles Marty of Seward, Nebraska; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Ebmeier and her husband, Delmar of Bertrand, Nebraska; two brother-in-laws, Harold Erickson and his wife, Carol of Holdrege, Jack McClellan of LuVern, IA; two sister-in-laws, Kathleen Meyer of Algona, Iowa, and Marge Wilson of Livermore, Iowa; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Wayne Johnston and his wife, Maxine and John Johnston; sister, Isabelle Erickson and one daughter-in-law, Cindy Marty.
