Description	:	Mrs. Melvina Heryford Nickerson, wife of the late James Nickerson, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. B. Harper, at Lincoln, Monday last. She had reached the good old age of 85 years and was in the full possession of her faculties. Her husband preceded her a year ago last September. They were married 70 years ago, she at the age of fifteen and he at seventeen. Mrs. Nickerson was one of the first white women to come to Placer county, settling with her husband at the famous "Nickerson Ranch," near Lincoln, when Western Placer was practically uninhabited.... Mrs. Nickerson was one of the first white women to come to Placer county, settling with her husband at the famous "Nickerson Ranch," near Lincoln, when Western Placer was practically uninhabited. It was there that the first orchard of Placer bore its fruit, and it was the home of the first winery. In those days the Nickerson home, typical of Southern hospitality, was the scene of many notable gatherings. The late General Bidwell and wife and General Jo Hamilton and wife, and other old timers, were frequent visitors at "Uncle Jimmy's." Mrs. Nickerson was a typical pioneer mother; charitable and hospitable. She was a great, great grandmother. Few people have lived as long and as well. Deceased leaves six children to mourn her loss, viz: James Allen Nickerson of Nevada City, William Albert Nickerson of Sacramento, John Robert and Benjamin Burnett Nickerson of Wolf, Nevada County; Mrs. T. B. Harper of Lincoln and Mrs. Lou Neimeyer of Sacramento. The funeral was held at Lincoln, Thursday, Revs. Bine and Coffin officiating. Interment in Manzanita cemetery. Contributor JMiller
