Memphis, 59, of Oakdale, entered eternal rest Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in Christus St. Patricks,Lake Charles. He was born on January 20, 1950 in the Ten Mile Community to the union of Dolph and Amy Thompson Johnson. He was Baptist by faith. He was a member of the La. Workforce Investment Board, Representative of the Democratic Party At Large, members of the Southwest and Southeast Laborers' District Council, President of the Local Union #692 - Pipeline Construction Workers of Louisiana. For many years, he was a passionate leader in making certain that employees either belonged to a union or were receiving proper benefits and treatment on the job. He was responsible for many families in our area having a career and a place to work. When you heard the name, "Memphis Johnson", you knew it was synonymous with labor organizations and the betterment of employees in Louisiana and across the United States.His father, Dolph Johnson, and sister, Frances Friday precede him in death.He leaves behind his loving family to cherish his memories, wife, Meredith "Sissy" Johnson of Oakdale; mother, Amy Johnson of Oberlin; two sons, Luke Johnson and fiancee', April Gordon of Oakdale, and Lane Johnson of Lafayette; two daughters, Jeannie LaBorde and husband, Jody of Vidor, Texas, and Lori Mathews and husband, Kyle of Mauriceville, Texas; four grandchildren, Rae LaBorde, Korbyn Lee, Kayla Lee, and Craig Mathews; one brother, Carles Johnson of Sacramento, California; one sister, Virginia Thompson of Pitkin, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.Pallbearers honored to serve will be the Executive Board of Local Union #692.Friends may call today in the White Oaks Memorial Chapel until Saturday morning and from 9 am until time of service in the church.
