He was born on March 28, 1879 at Lexington, Nebraska, while his parents William and Tjede Aden Ehmen were enroute to Gothenburg by covered wagon. His father was a Lutheran pastor who was about to organize and serve a mission at Gothenburg. Menhard was baptized by his father and subsequently confirmed as the family resided at Gothenburg until the father died. After the father's death the mother and family lived at Sterling. On April 1, 1900 Manhard Ehmen was united in marriage to Fannie Boatsman in Sterling. He built a residence near the northern edge of Sterling, which remained his home for more than half a century. He engaged in various kinds of business and practical activities. He served one term as sheriff of Johnson county. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran church at Sterling. Some years after the death of his wife a serious siege of illness induced him to move to Waverly, Iowa and take up residence in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gerhard Ottersberg. After recovering from surgery for cancer he spent several more active years looking after his own interests and those of his children. He became an invalid with arthuritis about two years ago, but remained mentally alert up to the very day of the fatal stroke. He is survived by his daughter Margaret Ottersberg and by his adopted daughter Mrs. Helene Bowen of Cody, Nebraska, as well as by one sister, Mrs. Henry F. Staack of Moline, Illinois, and by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, one brother and five sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Zink funeral home in Sterling, with the Rev. Kenneth Rust officiating. Pallbearers were Kenneth Beaver,Sr., Edes Eilers, John Goldenstein, John Reutter, Edwin Schmidt and Orville Wusk. Burial was in Sterling cemetery.
