Ehmen, one of Johnson county's best known citizens, died last Wednesday, March 17, 1954 in the hospital at Syracuse, Nebr., where he had been taken on March 13, for observation and treatment. Mr. Ehmen had been in failing health several years but a short time before his passing his condition grew worse and he went to the hospital to remain under the observation and care of his physician. He had shown improvement and was preparing to come home when without any warning a heart attack caused his death. William J. Ehmen, son of a Lutheran pastor, William Ehmen and his wife Tjede M. Ehmen nee Aden, was born at Gothenburg, Nebr., Dec. 21, 1887., and five days later was baptized into the covenant grace of God. When William was three years old his father died, leaving the mother with a family of 10 children, of whom William was next to the youngest. On March 8, 1897, the mother and her children moved to Sterling, Nebr. After religious instruction William was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 5, 1903. Mr. Ehmen was united in marriage to Josephine Buehler on Febr. 2, 1909, and to them were born three children, all of whom survive their father. Fifty-six years of his life were spent here in the Sterling community where he farmed and also served as precinct assessor. The past two years he had filled the office of county assessor during the turbulent days of adjustment to new tax valuations. The heavy responsibilities which fell on his frail shoulders did nothing to improve his health, for he took those obligations very seriously. His conscientious management of the office earned for him highest praise, no only from local county officials but also from state officials who knew of and appreciated his efforts. Mr. Ehmen, known to his many friends as "Pop," was never too busy for a cheerful word and he will be greatly missed by a large circle of acquaintances as well as by his family. He had reached the age of 66 years, 2 months and 26 days when the final summons came. Surviving are his wife; three children, Arwilla Kadlic of Lincoln; Harlan Ehmen of Eston, Sadkatchewan, Canada and Robert of Omaha; three grandchildren; a brother, Menhard Ehmen of Waverly, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. E. Boatsman of Sheridan, Wyo., Mrs. John Christline of Sterling, Mrs. H. Arnold of Cooperstown, New York, and Mrs. H. F. Stack of Moline, Ill., also other relatives. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in St. John American Lutheran church with the Rev. Herman C. Damm in charge. Mrs. John Goldenstein was at the organ and quartet numbers by Mr. and Mrs. Edes Eilers, Altman Berg and Mrs. Harvey Giesmann were "Saved by Grace" and Abide With Me." The congregation sang "For Me to Live Is Jesus" and "Jesus Lead the Way." All of the county officials with whom Mr. Ehmen had served, attended the services, and several state officials were also present. Pallbearers were J. G. Huls, Edes Eilers, George Christline, Alfred Rodenbeck, Dick Wohlers and Henry Franken. Burial was in the Sterling cemetery. To those who mourn goes the sympathy of a host of friends.
