Description	:	"Merdie" was born and raised in Jackson Co KY. He and his two daughters relocated to Germantown Wayne Co IN following the death of his first wife. Later he met and married Fannie Jones also of Jackson Co KY. Four more children were born while living in Germantown IN. After 1935, the Smith's relocated to Dublin IN. Two more children completed the family. As a youth, Smith suffered a severe accident and as a result was left a cripple. Believing in hard work and perseverance, he went on to retire from the Pennsylvania Railroad after thirty six years of service. Often his grandchildren could be seen with him as he picked blackberries and wet a line down at Myers Pond. The Gospel Mission Church in Dublin IN was where he worshiped his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Hymns were his favorite songs. Many Sunday afternoons found him picking his banjo as other family members strummed their guitars. Smith succumbed to cancer leaving his friends and family to cherish his memory.
