He was born June 2, 1922 in Jefferson, IA to Victor and Matilda Albertina Engberg Ogren. He married Georgia Bates on August 21, 1949. He was born June 2, 1922 in Jefferson, IA to Victor and Matilda Albertina Engberg Ogren. He married Georgia Bates on August 21, 1949. A graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Merle was a salesman for Champion Fluid Company in Missouri for 5 years and was a funeral director for Johnson Funeral Chapel in Ottumwa from 1965 to 1992. He was a 50 year member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, a member of Iowa Funeral Directors Association, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Wapello Chiefs Barbershop Chorus. Surviving is his wife, Georgia; two sons, Rev. Mark Ogren and his wife Rev. Margie Turbyfill of Ashland, Virginia and Gary Ogren and his wife Debra of Ottumwa; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Matthew Ogren of Ashland, Virginia. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Carl Ogren and three sisters, Evelyn McClurg, Dorothy Mumby and Victoria Knapper. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Shrimplin officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.
