Description	:	Merle Duffy, 83, of 415 North 3rd Street, Marshalltown, formerly of Lafayette Avenue, Van Cleave, died Saturday night, July 30th, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. His death came peacefully at 7:50 P.M. with his family at his side. Funeral services and a celebration of Merle's life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, August 3rd, at the Central Christian Church with Pastor Gail Thiessen and Charlie Fry, Director of Volunteer Services at the IVH officiating. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Merle and his family. Born on April 24th, 1922, at Marshalltown, he was the son of Ben and Bessie (Clemons) Duffy. He received his education in the area of his birth. He farmed with his father and in WWII served honorably in the United States Navy. On June 20th, 1948, he was united in marriage to Leota Dillon in Union, Iowa. They made their home in the Clemons area and later farmed near Van Cleave. Merle later worked for Gra-Iron, the custodian and bus driver at Van Cleave Schools and retired at age 81 as a school bus driver/mechanic for Marshalltown Schools. Merle was an active volunteer at the Iowa Veterans Home, receiving the Governors Award for 10000 hours in volunteer service, a lifetime member of the Harry C. Harter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839 where he served in many different positions including funeral entourage and post commander, the Central Christian Church, a past member of the Van Cleave UCC and lifetime member of the American Legion. Left to celebrate his life are his son Joe (Maggie) Duffy of Marshalltown, daughter Linda (Bob) Ames of LeGrand, his longtime friend and companion Reca Harnish of Marshalltown, grandchildren Heather (Darren) Connolly of Chicago, Jamie Ames of Marshalltown, John (Samantha) Ames of Kirksville, MO., Michael (Amy) Duffy of Des Moines and Kristen Duffy of Des Moines, great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Gabriel, Caden, Dillen, Jenna, Logan and Breana, his siblings: LaVerne Huseboe, Luella Poe and Pearl Hennis all of Marshalltown, Dale (Zola) Duffy of Iowa Falls, Helen Stonewall of Peotone, IL., Wallace (Shirley) Duffy of Casa Grande, AZ., Charlotte (Harold) Lancaster of Scottsdale, AZ., Bernadell (Gilbert) Lilly of Marshalltown and John (Bernice) Duffy of Marshalltown, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, Leota's family and a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his wife Leota, parents, brothers Glenn (Hannah), Marion (Edith) and Clarence (Dorothy), sister Bernadean Duffy, brother-in-laws Merle Huseboe, Cleo Poe, Duth Hennis and Ozzie Stonewall.
