Description	:	John W. Duffy, 82, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. John Duffy was born September 21, 1931 to Ben and Bessie Duffy in Abilene, KS. They later moved to Clemons, IA with their 13 children. John loved their farm there and helped his father with farm chores. John went to the school in Clemons. John Duffy was born September 21, 1931 to Ben and Bessie Duffy in Abilene, KS. They later moved to Clemons, IA with their 13 children. John loved their farm there and helped his father with farm chores. John went to the school in Clemons. After school, John went into the Marines for a tour of duty lasting two years, 10 of those were spent in Korea. Then, he worked on the railroad and later went to work at Bailey's Boy Pop plant in Marshalltown. He eventually went to work for the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he served as head cook in the dietary department for 39 years; he had a talent for cooking simple meals and turning them into a banquet. John was united in marriage to Berniece Olsen in Marshalltown on February 26, 1956. John was a loving husband and friend to Berniece for many years often surprising her with various arrangements of red roses. They spent their married life working, traveling, dancing, shopping in little out of the way places and picnicking. They especially enjoyed visiting with friends, relatives and neighbors. John had a talent for growing roses and tomatoes. He enjoyed bowling and fishing; enjoying animals of all sizes. He always kept his bird feeder filled and spent countless hours watching them from his front window in his favorite chair. He was a helper at all times; a great caregiver for his parents, his wife's parents and his sister and brother-in-law. John was a lifetime member of the Marshalltown VFW and supported the American Legion to his dying day. John will be missed by his loving wife, Berniece, his sisters, Bernadell Lilly of Marshalltown, IA, Helen Stonewall of Peotone, IL, Charlotte (Harold) Landcaster of Scotsdale, AZ, a brother, Wallace (Shirley) Duffy of Phoenix, AZ along with any nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
