Description	:	BANGOR and PRESQUE ISLE – Merle E. "Bud" Carter, 89, died early Sunday morn-ing, Dec. 2, 2007, at the Bangor Veterans' Home. He was born Feb. 15, 1918, in Mapleton, the son of Maurice and Elizabeth (Patten) Carter. Bud served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the African and Italian Campaigns as a tank commander in the 752nd tank battalion. He was always proud to have completed his basic training under the supervision of Gen. George Patton. "Bud" Carter, 89, died early Sunday morn-ing, Dec. 2, 2007, at the Bangor Veterans' Home. He was born Feb. 15, 1918, in Mapleton, the son of Maurice and Elizabeth (Patten) Carter. Bud served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the African and Italian Campaigns as a tank commander in the 752nd tank battalion. He was always proud to have completed his basic training under the supervision of Gen. George Patton. Mr. Carter recently received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Citizens of Maine for recognition of his honorable service in World War II. He married Florence E. Ginn, Sept. 20, 1944. Bud owned Carter's Market, Parkhurst Siding, and farmed for several years. He later sold automobiles for Osborn Ford, Presque Isle and later for Kelley Pontiac, Bangor, until his retirement. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Presque Isle, the Lunar Chapter No. 126 O.E.S. and the Anah Temple Mystic Shrine, Bangor. He was a member of Grant Memorial Methodist Church, Presque Isle. Bud's family is especially grate-ful to those caregivers at the Veterans' Affairs Home, Bangor, especially friends, Linda, Judy, Heidi, Geri, Diane, Joyce and Clyde. Many special thanks to his doctor, Penny Lamhut. He is survived by three sons, James R. Carter and his wife, Robin, of Presque Isle, M. Thomas Carter and his wife, Sharon, of Bangor and Rick L. Carter and his wife, Diane, of South Burlington, Vt.; several grandchildren, Heather Pierce of Orland, Casey Carter of Burlington, Vt., Curtis Carter of Mojave, Calif., and Carissa Carter of Belfast, stepgrandson, Seth Cronkite of Bangor, Adam Carter of Old Town and Jonathon Carter of Brewer; one great-grandson, Chase Carter Pierce of Orland; several brothers and sisters, Myrtle Hughes, Betty Harris, Winnifred Beaulieu, Maxine DiPierre and Arnold Carter; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife; sisters, Gladys and Erma; and brothers, Kenneth, Bill and Arthur. Relatives and friends may call 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. A Masonic service will be held 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held May 2008 at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle, with the Rev. David Williams officiating.
