Read More	From The Wolbach Messenger, December 15, 1960, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney: Merle Horn Critically Burned; Clothes Ignite When Starting Fire -- Merle Horn, about 60, received multiple third degree burns early Friday morning when his clothing caught fire at his home in the Stringtown addition. As near as can be ascertained, Horn was attempting to light a stove and was using fuel oil. Whether spilling the fuel on his clothes or a resulting explosion set the clothes aflame is not certain. A blanket was found in the house where he apparently had tried to extinguish the fire by rolling in it. With clothes aflame, he ran to a neighbor's home for help. Parts of burning clothing were found on the sidewalk to the Henry Rother home, some 100 yards away, when the fire department arrived minutes later after being summoned by the Rothers. Fire in the home was confined to two very small blazes, one near the stove and another on a linoleum rug, which was quickly confined. The house was filled with smoke, causing more damage than the fire. The injured man was taken to the St. Paul hospital by his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Watts and a member of the fire department, Glen Bryer. He was transferred to the University hospital in Omaha by ambulance early Friday afternoon. Mrs. Watts accompanied the ambulance which had an escort by the highway patrol. Preliminary examinations at the St. Paul hospital unofficially listed his injuries as third degree burns from the waist up, front and back on his left side and left arm. His condition was listed as critical earlier. The accident occurred about one o'clock in the morning. Three other homes are closer to the Horn home than where he summoned help. It is not known if he tried to get help at any of these or not. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From The Wolbach Messenger, January 12, 1961, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney: Final Rites for Merle Horn, 60, Held Sat -- [....Funeral details...] Merle Frederick Horn was born August 15, 1900 at Wolbach, the son of Mary and David Horn. He spent his entire life in Wolbach excepting for a few years spent on construction work during World War II. He departed this life on January 3, 1961 at the University Hospital in Omaha where he had been a patient since December 10 when he was severely burned in a fire at his home. He leaves to mourn his passing, one sister, Mrs. Gladys Watts of Wolbach, one brother, Mr. Francis Horn of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents and five brothers.
