Merle was born on May 18, 1940 at the Elma Hospital in Elma to Harry John Carl and Alice Wilhelmina (Lubbert) Groth. He attended Howard county schools and was a graduate of Riceville High School. Merle was united in marriage to Jane Affeldt at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City on June 22, 1963. Merle worked as a machinist at White Farms in Charles City for 34 years. Merle was a lifetime member of the Jaycees and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Jane of Riceville, Two sons: Jess Groth of Hampton, IA and Bryce Groth of Mason City, IA, a daughter: Sonja and her husband Brian Conger of Rochester, MN and three grandchildren: Jacob Groth, Melissa Conger and Megan Conger. Also surviving is a brother Eldon and his wife Norma Groth of Saratoga, IA and a sister, Elaine Eschweiler of Riceville, IA. Merle was preceded in death by his parents
