He died Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of fifty-eight. Merle was born on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ November 3, 1946 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and later confirmed there on April 10, 1960. He received his elementary education at the Mullen School in Willow Township and graduated from the Charter Oak-Ute High School with the class of 1964. After completing his education, Merle worked at Iowa Beef Processors for seventeen years. On July 1, 1967, Merle was united in marriage to Myra Weifenbach at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They made their home in Charter Oak for a short time before moving to Ricketts. Merle farmed for a few years and then in the early 1980's, he began working at American Protein in Denison. Merle was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. He enjoyed farming and socializing with family and friends. He also loved helping and assisting other people. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother in infancy. Survivors include one son, John Keim of Denison; one daughter, Sara Ewoldt of Denison; two grandchildren, John Edward II and Kevin Merle; his mother, Narlean Keim of Charter Oak; his special friend, Marlyn Kunze of Ute; two sisters, Janna Pierce and her husband, Raymond of Madisonville, Texas; Marsha Kolls and her husband, Henry of Denison; one brother, Dale Keim and his wife, Janine of Denison; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Edward Brandt officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Charter Oak Cemetery. Organist Art Beeck provided the service music singing, "On Eagle's Wings" and accompanying the congregational hymns "Just As I Am", and "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Adolph Neddermeyer, Earl Keim, Paul Kuhlmann and Donnie Keim. Those serving as pallbearers were Alan Kuhlmann, Kevin Streck, Mark Berens, Scott Anderson, Wayne Elwell, Brian Kessel and David Keim. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.
