Born June 1, 1921, in Rising City, Neb., he died Thursday in Lancaster at age 77. A U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he worked 35 years as an air traffic controller. Survivors include his wife, Ardelle, and brother-in-law, Cecil See. Chapel of the Valley Mortuary is in charge of arrangements Merle was the son of William Emery Grubaugh and Josephine Marie Steager. He was their sixth child out of a total of 9 children. He was married a number of times. He married Kathleen Gienger on 12 Jul 1948, divorcing shortly after that. He married Betty Jean Martinson 18 May 1951 and divorced her in 1959. He married Dena M. Prescott on 4 Oct 1960 and divorced her in Jun 1967. He then married Wilda Ardelle Bittner on 1 Jul 1969 and was married to her (on and off) for the rest of his life. He divorced Ardelle at least twice (Jan 1971 and Jul 1976), but his obituary still refers to Ardelle as his wife, so they may have married three times. Despite having a place on Merle's tombstone for Ardelle's burial, she was buried separately in Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Palmdale, CA. Ardelle died in 2002. Merle had two children with his second wife, Betty Jean Martinson, Sharmain Jean Grubaugh and Bradley Martin Grubaugh. He had one child with his third wife, Dena M. Prescott, Terry William Grubaugh.
