Cloyd Rowe, 48, of Burnettsviile, was killed instantly as the skidding car driven by Kenneth Scott, 25, of Gary, crashed sideways into the three men as they removed a "slow" sign two feet from the edge of the pavement. Merle Lee McMullen, 17, of route 3, Monticello, died a few minutes after he was rushed to Memorial hospital in the Thomas ambulance from Galveston. Allan Roy Nicholas, 16, of Monticello, the other highway employe who was struck by the car, is in critical condition at Memorial hospital. A fourth highway employe, Roy Smith, who was seated nearby in a truck, was the only one of the group who escaped, injury. McMullen, who would have been 18 years of age next month, was just graduated from Monticello high school. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl McMullen, of Monticello. Nicholas was a senior at Monticello high school. Both he and McMullen had been employed as laborers on the highway paint gang since May 28. McMullen, who resided at 710 North Illinois street in Monticello, is survived by the parents, a sister, Minnie, at home; and a brother. Wednesday, June 4, 1953 - Logansport Pharos-Tribune
