Description	:	Merle Madison Shafer, son of Levi and Georgia (Gobel) Shafer, was born on December 14, 1896 in Superior, NE. He departed this life on May 23, 2005 at the Rosebrook Care Center in Edgar, Nebraska at the age of 108 years, 4 months and 29 days. Merle's father died with (sic) he was eight. Shorty married Elsie Melvin at Elsie's home in Clay Center on May 19, 1929. They farmed in the Angus community until 1952 when they moved to Edgar. Merle was employed by the Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings for three years, Leland Hawley, and then for 17 years as a school custodian in Edgar. During his retirement he helped out at the Rosebrook Care Center in Edgar. Religion was a very important part of Merle and Elsie's lives at the United Brethren Church in Angus and then the Church of the Plains in Edgar. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Elsie on December 6, 2001, an infant son Merlin Claude and twin granddaughters. He is survived by daughters: Veva and husband Bud Ferebee of Nelson, Nebraska, Rena and husband Carl Murman of Glenvil, Nebraska, and Georgia and husband John Hillen, Jr. of Guersney, Wyoming; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and their spouses other relatives and his many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Williams Funeral Home in Edgar. Pastor Ellen Campbell will officiate with interment in the Edgar Cemetery.
