Description	:	Merle V. "Buck" Armstrong, Sr., 88, of Reserve, died Saturday morning, February 6, 2010, at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Hiawatha. Merle was born at Horton, May 10, 1921, one of five sons of Charles and Vesta Mae Bower Armstrong and had spent most of his life in northeast Kansas. "Buck" Armstrong, Sr., 88, of Reserve, died Saturday morning, February 6, 2010, at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Hiawatha. Merle was born at Horton, May 10, 1921, one of five sons of Charles and Vesta Mae Bower Armstrong and had spent most of his life in northeast Kansas. He grew up at Horton where he attended schools, later graduating from Horton High School with the class of 1939. Merle was in the top 10 of his graduating class in high school. He served from 1942 until 1945 with the US Air Force during World War II, serving in the European Theater, discharged at the rank of E-5. After the service, he returned to the states and took a position with Western Electric, working as an installer, based of out Topeka. He retired in 1985 after 40 years of service. He moved to Reserve in 1962 to help care for his elderly parents in their failing health. Mr. Armstrong was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church of Topeka. He was a life member of Homer-White Post #66, Hiawatha American Legion, and VFW Post #15017 of Kansas City; and was a Kansas member at Large of the VFW. He married Norma Jean Simmonds, April 28, 1946 at Reserve. She survives. Also surviving are two sons: Dennis and wife Terri Armstrong of Aiken, SC, Gary and wife Betsy Armstrong of Tulsa, OK; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Merle was preceded in death by his parents; a son Merle Armstrong, Jr., in 1992; four brothers: Lou, Ivan, Charles, and Carl. Due to inclement weather, graveside services will be held at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, with Reverend Randy Quinn officiating. Military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, as a courtesy of the Brown County Honor Team. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Monday. Memorial contributions are suggested to NEK Multi-County Hospice which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
