Description	:	Son of Earl & Bertha (Peregrine) Black. Married to Lois Cantrell on 6-5-1943 at Pittsburg, KS. He entered the military service in autumn 1942, taking his U.S. Army basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif. He and his wife were married while he was attending U.S. Army flight school. As an Army air observation pilot flying a 65-horsepower Piper Cub airplane - a "Grasshopper," as they were nicknamed - he participated in the Normandy invasion and fought in five campaigns: Northern France, Normandy, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes-Alsace. He was wounded twice, receiving the Purple Heart Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, and was also awarded the Air Medal and five Oak Leaf Clusters for completing more than 189 missions over enemy territory. He remained in touch with many of his comrades and always remembered with reverence those who did not come home. He returned stateside as a captain in September 1945 and received his honorable discharge January 1946, at which time he and his wife moved to a farm northwest of Central City. He and his brother, Willard, farmed in partnership as Black Brothers for 40 years until his retirement in 1986. He also was active in the Merrick County community as a school board member for School District 13, County Fair Board member for more than 30 years, a member of the Merrick County Historical Museum, Farm Bureau, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 6 and the Nebraska Hereford Association. Those surviving are his daughters Susan Black (Mrs. Mark Seader) of New York, NY, Deborah King (and companion Delbert Bender) of Kenesaw, and Lynne (Mrs. Steven) Messersmith of Alliance; grandchildren Clay (Michelle) Messersmith of Rapid City, SD, Cara (Aaron) Wade of Alliance, Rebecca (Steve) Lush and Kristina King of Kearney; great-granddaughters Kaitlyn, Shaylee and Jenna Messersmith, and great-grandsons Camden and Bryce Wade; his sister Winona (Ivan)King of Central City and sisters-in-law Celia Black of Central City and Geneva Rosser of Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, Willard.
