Read More	Merlin Henry Schaaf Atlantic News Telegraph Friday May 9, 2003 Merlin Henry Schaaf, 78, of Ellston, and formerly of Cumberland, passed away Monday, May 5, 2003 at his daughter's home in Ellston. Mr. Schaaf was born Dec. 2, 1924 at the family home near Lyman, the son of Herman F. and Zeta Mueller Schaaf. Merlin was raised on a farm near Cumberland, and farmed in the Cumberland area all his life with the exception of two years at Lewis. He moved to Ellston in 2002. He was a 1942 graduate of the Atlantic High School, and married Vera L. Foster on Dec. 4, 1960 at the former First Christian Church in Atlantic. Mr. Schaaf served in United States Army in Korea during the Korean War. Merlin was member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Lyman, where he had served on the church board. He was member of the Donald Lee American Legion Post No. 320, Cumberland, and was once a member of several bowling leagues and card clubs. Merlin Schaaf is survived by his wife, Vera of Ellston; two daughters, Deborah and her husband Duane Reasoner of Ellston, Becky McLaughlin of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Rosie and her husband Curt Masteller of Atlantic; one brother, Galen Schaaf of Omaha, Neb.; sever grandchildren, Joshua, Brian, Kurtis, Allison, Sarah, Megan, and Courtney; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Schaaf will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 10, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Lyman, with the Reverend James Hansen officiating. Music for the service will be provided by Nancy Wohlenhaus, organist, and soloist Virginia Berg will sing "How Great Thou Art" and "Never Alone." Casket bearers will be Delmar Berg and Verlyn Berg, Curt Masteller, Howard Paulsen, Jack Denne, Joshua Schaaf, Wayne McFadden, and Lloyd Christensen. The flower committee will be Reverend Jeff and Lynne Flagg. Committal services and interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Lyman, Iowa with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Donald Lee American Legion Post #320, Cumberland. Friends may call after 10a.m. Thursday, and the family will be present to greet friends Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic is in charge of arrangements.
