Read More	June 9, 1924 - August 30, 2015 Merlyn Edward “Jegg” Jeglum, 91, of Omak, Wash., was received into Heaven on Aug. 30, 2015, at his home of 59 years, surrounded by family. Merlyn was born June 9, 1924, in Dempster, S.D., to Edward and Minnie Jeglum. Arriving in Omak at age 8 years old, he graduated from Omak High School in 1942. A defining moment for Merlyn was at a very young age when he watched what he considered a “mansion” being built close to where he was living. He set his sights on someday owning that home. He planned, saved and sacrificed to purchase that home and it was in that dream home that he was able to take his final breaths. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Omak and married his lifelong love, Betty Spaulding, on Nov. 18, 1949. Betty and Merlyn raised six children together. They owned and operated the Chevron station and A&W Drive-In. If an individual needed gas, tires or his service, he would make sure they got what they needed and worried about payment at a later time. The A&W Drive-In was a popular hub for local teenagers and was the “south turn-around” for all of the Friday and Saturday night “cruising.” It was also known to have the best burgers, fries and root-beer floats in town. All of the Jeglum “kids” worked there and saved the money they earned to pay for college. Merlyn volunteered at the Omak Food Bank, mowing the lawns and removing the snow for his neighbors, especially widows, and what seemed to be the whole town of Omak at times. He was a man who cared about doing what was right for the community and was willing to put the needs of others ahead of his own. Whether he was fishing in the “Numb-Butt” with eight people and two dogs, taking long Sunday drives or wood cutting and hauling, he always lent his hand for help or teachings. A couple of his famous sayings were “Keep your gun loaded and your powder dry” and “Through the teeth, over the gums, look out belly here she comes.” These sayings exemplify his gruff demeanor and fun nature and will be remembered by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for generations to come. A favorite iconic vehicle known by all in Omak was a 1951 Willy’s jeep. It was Jegg’s rig, but every one of the kids drove that jeep and created many a fun memory. Another one of his loves and impacts was Trinity Lutheran Church on 4th and Ash where he attended, volunteered, served as councilman and was a member more than six decades. Surviving Merlyn are his five children, Laura Cornwall, Ed Jeglum, Lynn (Kevin) Love, Carl (Tresa) Jeglum, and K.C. O’Hara; grandchildren, Makenna, Sarah, Matt, Tony (Kristy), Jennifer, Andrea (Drew), Emily, Sandy, Loren, Jake and Justin; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Faith, Andrew, J.R. and Bailey. A future great-grandson is due to arrive in December and he will honor his great-grandfather by carrying his name, James Merlyn Jeglum. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; sister, Viola McNeil; and son, David Jeglum. The family requests memorials be made in honor of Merlyn to Trinity Lutheran Church in Omak or the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel, at 2547 Elmway, Okanogan, Wash., is in care of arrangements. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 12, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 104 W 4th Ave., Omak, Wash.
