CHARLES NEWBERRY DIES IN HOSPITAL TUESDAY SON, 2 1/2 YEARS OLD, ALTHOUGH BADLY BURNED, THOUGHT TO BE ON WAY TO RECOVERY About eleven o'clock Tuesday morning occurred a fatal accident at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Newberry, near the Chadron State Park, when their home burned down and both, Mrs. Newberry and her son, burned, Mrs. Newberry passing away later the same day. With the men folk away from the home, Mrs. Ila Brown, a cousin of Mrs. Newberry, was cleaning clothes in gasoline on the back porch. A high wind carried fumes into the kitchen, where the kitchen fire exploded the fumes and set fire to the kitchen. Mrs. Newberry, who was out doors at the time, thought her son, Lyle, two and one-half years old, was in the front part of the house and ran through the flames to keep him from the fire. Her clothing caught on fire in passing through the flames and she rushed into the bedroom where Mrs. Brown, who went into the house through another door, aided her in smothering out the flames on Mrs. Newberry's clothing with bed clothes. Hearing her son scream, Mrs. Newberry rushed out, again through the flames in the kitchen and picked up the boy, taking him back from the house. The boy was burned about the hands and face from the fire started a second time on his mother's clothing. Two men, from the Dunlap vicinity, who were hauling wood in that vicinity with a trailer on their car, met the two women and the boy a few hundred yards from the home. They dropped the trailer and started for town with Mrs. Newberry, the boy and Mrs. Brown. At the J. H. Newberry farm, one of the men went to notify the family of the fire. Mr. Newberry returned with him to the home of his sons and there missed the women folk before he had been told of the accident and that Mrs. Newberry was taken to the hospital. His son was called from where he was hauling feed. Members of the C. C. C. camp at the State park went to assist in fighting the fire, but the home and all within it burned to the ground. Twelve hours after the accident, Mrs. Newberry passed away. Her son, today, is getting along nicely. He recognizes his father's voice, is able to eat, but his face and hands are yet swollen from the burns and blisters, yet his condition is not to be considered serious. Mrs. Newberry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hallsted, was born in Chadron December 1, 1909, and died December 12, 1933, making her age 24 years and 11 days. On January 4, 1927, she was married to Charles Newberry, of Chadron, and to this union was born one son, Robert Lyle. In the spring of 1927, she united with the Baptist church of Chadron, where she held her membership when she died. She leaves to mourn her death her husband and son, her father, A. J. Hallsted, five brothers, Clarence, of Bisbee, Arizona; Raymond, of Worland, Wyoming; Ored, of Bayfield, Colorado, and Lyle and James, both of Chadron. There are also those on her husband's side, especially her father-in-law and mother-in-law, who looked to her for comfort and help as they would to an own daughter, and many loyal friends. Mrs. Newberry has always lived a quiet, unassuming, yet a very consistent christian life. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was superintendent of the Chadron Creek Sunday school for several years under the supervision of the American Sunday School Union. She will be greatly missed by the community, but the memory of her life will always be sweet and much respected. The funeral services were held in the Baptist church Thursday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. A. Pierce Waltz, officiating.
