Description	:	"His career began near the end of World War II, when, after completing his freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he enlisted in the Army. He volunteered for parachute training and earned his jump wings. He was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, but the war ended before he saw combat. He was transferred to the Occupation forces in Europe and, now a second lieutenant, was assigned to Army intelligence units in Germany, where his work involved debriefing ex-Nazis and facing the nascent Soviet and East German Cold War threats. He continued to rise through the ranks of Army counterintelligence to become a director of Army and Dept. of Defense intelligence security and interagency programs by 1974. After retirement in 1985 from Pentagon work, Mr. Kelly worked as a staff consultant for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence from 1986-1988." "In addition to his UNC degree, Merrill Kelly had a Masters of Science in Foreign Affairs from George Washington University (1966) and was a 1965 graduate of the National War College at Fort McNair.
