Burial with full military honors by Jackson American Legion Post will follow in Union State Line Cemetery. Hoffmeyer died Tuesday morning, July 28, 1998, at his rural farm home in rural Sherburn. Merritt Lloyd Hoffmeyer was born March 5, 1936, in Estherville, son of Floyd and Holly (Stam) Hoffmeyer. He moved with famiy to the Petersburg area, where he received his education. In 1958, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1960. He then was employed at John Morrell Company, Estherville. He married Evie Houge at Union State Line Church in Petersburg on Sept. 16, 1961. After their wedding they lived on a farm near Petersburg. They later moved to a farm in Jay Township, Martin County, where they were hobby farmers. He continued working for John Morrell Company for a total of 25 years. He later did commercial painting for various people in the area and also assisted farmers in the area. He was a member of Union State Line Church, Petersburg. Along with his family, he was a caretaker of Lake Fremont Cemetery, Dunnell. Survivors include: wife, Evie Hoffmeyer of rural Sherburn; son, Ron "Butch" Hoffmeyer of Los Angeles; daughters, Joni Williams and husband, Mike, of Faribault, Heidi Knox and husband, Dave, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Holli Hoffmeyer of Eagle Lake; six grandchildren; brothers William Hoffmeyer and wife, Era, of Petersburg, and Lloyd Hoffmeyer and wife, Barb, of Estherville; sisters, Sandra Mixell of Dundee, and Joy Zweibahmer and husband, Charles, of Milford, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Toby Houge and wife, Barb, of Dolliver, and Everett Houge and wife, Janet, of Superior, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Arlene Nourse and husband, Charles, of Estherville, Janice Timmins of Des Moines, Iowa, and Karen Stoltz and husband, Ron, of Fairfield, Iowa; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
