He departed this life on Sunday, January 10, 1999, at Integrated Health Services in Edgar, Nebraska, at the age of 92. As an infant, Merton moved with his parents to Geneva, Nebraska. He attended school at Geneva and graduated with the Class of 1924. June 2, 1931, Merton was united in marriage with Beulah Skinner in Mankato, Kansas. Last year Merton and Beulah celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. That union was blessed with four children. He farmed all of his life in Nuckolls County. In January of 1973, Merton and his wife retired and moved to Edgar. Merton was a member of the Church of the Plains in Edgar. He was past master of Blue Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Royal __irch and Knights of Templar-___ Shrine; past president of Lions Club and past patron of Order of the Eastern Star. He served as mayor of Edgar from 1978-82. He served on the Leisure Village board for 15 years and was chairman of the board for six years. He was a volunteer at the nursing home. Preceding him in death were his parents, four sisters, three brothers, one granddaughter and one great granddaughter. Survivors include his wife, Beulah of Edgar; one daughter, Phyllis Baker and her fiance John Freeburg of Littleton, Colorado; three sons, Connie and his wife Marg of Grand Island, Nebraska, Kent and his wife Willa of Edgar, Nebraska, Alvin and his wife Nola of Odell, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 14, 1999, at Williams Funeral Home Chapel at Edgar, Nebraska, with Rev. Frank Cepris and Pastor Harold _ox officiating. Burial was in Edgar Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital.
