Description	:	Merton Spencer Hallauer was born October 30, 1916 in Powhattan Township, Brown County, Kansas to Bert W. and Cora (Rickel) Hallauer. His first nine years were spent on the family farm where he was born, except part of the year 1919 which he passed in McLean Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri undergoing treatment for polio. The disease left him with a crippled right arm. In 1927 the family moved to the vicinity of Mayetta then returned to the Netawaka community where Merton attended a country school northeast of Netawaka. His first nine years were spent on the family farm where he was born, except part of the year 1919 which he passed in McLean Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri undergoing treatment for polio. The disease left him with a crippled right arm. In 1927 the family moved to the vicinity of Mayetta then returned to the Netawaka community where Merton attended a country school northeast of Netawaka. He was a student at Netawaka High School when he suffered an appendix attack. His death, at the Horton Hospital, was caused by a weak heart, further weakened as the result of an appendix operation on February 17, followed by two abscess operations on February 26.
