Corning, who was commander of South Dakota National Guard from 1963 to 1983, died Monday at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a long illness. Visitation will be at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial was established. He was born April 1, 1917, at Madison to Lee and Maude (Winters) Corning. He grew up in Madison, Rapid City and Sioux Falls, graduating from Sioux Falls Washington High School in 1935. He then graduated from Sioux Falls College. He served in the South Dakota Army National Guard from 1934 to 1939. He enlisted in the Naval Air Corps in August 1941 and served until August 1945. He married Catherine Schnaidt on Oct. 1, 1942, at Sioux Falls. After his naval service, he returned to Sioux Falls. He was in the flying business with Joe Foss. During that time, Foss and Corning were asked to organize the South Dakota Air National Guard Squadron. He was director of veterans housing in Sioux Falls for three years. He then entered the South Dakota Air National Guard and was called to active duty during the Korean War He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in August 1950. After deactivation, he returned to South Dakota and became the 114th Fighter Group commander in Sioux Falls and was promoted to colonel in 1956. Corning was appointed adjutant general of the South Dakota National Guard by Gov. Archie Gubbrud on Nov. 1, 1963. At that time Corning moved to Rapid City. He also was promoted to brigadier general. On Nov. 1, 1964, he was promoted to major general. Corning also was state Civil Defense director, Selective Service director and Emergency Services planning director. He retired as adjutant general Feb. 28, 1983. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Rapid City and was active in many organizations and activities. Survivors include his wife; two sons; one daughter; two brothers, and six grandchildren.
