Young Van Loan had... Read More	Underwood Boy Killed By Own Gun NEW UNDERWOOD A 13-year-old New Underwood boy accidentally killed himself while hunting alone near here Saturday morning. Killed instantly when a .22-caliber bullet entered his cheek below the left eye was Michael Allen Van Loan. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Van Loan, New Underwood. The boy's body was found by two 15-year-old New Underwood youths who also were hunting. Bill Caneal and Carl Boor found the body shortly after noon just north of the high school rodeo grounds. Young Van Loan had gone hunting about 8:30 a.m. Coroner Harry Behrens said the youth's rifle apparently had a hair trigger. When he set the gun on the ground, it discharged, killing him instantly, Behrens said. The accident was investigated by Behrens, Deputy Sheriff John Self and State Patrolman Robert Klatt. The boy is survived by his parents, two brothers, Charles, 12, and Richard, 9, and a maternal grandmother, Mrs. Emma Coyle, Rapid City. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. The boy was a sixth grader in New Underwood and had been active in cub scout work. He was born in Rapid City on Nov. 23, 1946, With his parents, he lived in Washington state from 1947 to 1955 before moving to New Underwood. Requiem high mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Church in New Underwood. The Kev. Charles Quinn will be celebrant. Burial will be in New Underwood cemetery. Rosary will be said Monday at 8 p.m. in the Hobart Chapel in Rapid City.
