Died -- Monday, August 26, at his home south of Weeping Water, Michael Bourke, one of the oldest and best known residents of this section of the county. Mr. Bourke had been ill for several weeks, but not until a few days previous to his death was hope for his recovery given up. The end came Monday morning shortly after midnight - surrounded by wife, family, and friends, fortified by all the comforts of religious, without a sigh, without a struggle - the patient sufferer passed quietly and peacefully to the great unknown. The funeral took place Wednesday August 28, a long line of carriages following the remains to their last resting place in the Catholic cemetery on College Hill. Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Hennessy, after which followed a short and eloquent sermon on death, ending with a brief sketch of the life of the deceased. Michael Bourke was born in Ireland sixty seven years ago. At the age of fourteen he left his native land and with his parents came to America, landing on the Lower Shores of Canada. Shortly afterwards his mother and father both died, and he was left at age fifteen a "stranger in a strange land" -- poor, friendless - to fight the battle of life alone. For eighteen years he lived on Canadian soil, and about '68 came to the United States, settling on a little farm in eastern Iowa. Later on, with others who were coming westward to try their fortunes in a new County, he came to Nebraska and took up his new life on the farm he occupied at the time of his death. He lived there for almost a quarter century, beloved and respected by friends and neighbors,by all whose lives touched his. His was a singularly noble and winning nature, honest and upright in all his business transactions, kind and loveable in his home life, he won and kept many true and loyal friends. He had a kind word, a pleasant smile for everyone, and even in the weakness and suffering preceding his death the cheerful patience which had grown to be characteristic did not for an instant desert him. He will be missed and mourned by many outside of his immediate circle of relatives and friends.
