He completed a common and high school course and in the fall of 1908, entered St. Joseph's College, Dubuque, Iowa, and continued his course until, broken in health, he returned to his home in November 1909. Since that date he has been patiently fighting the battle for life aided by tender nursing and the best service of skilled physicians. All efforts to save his life proved unavailing and he peacefully closed his eyes and passed to his eternal home on January 16, 1910. He was a brilliant scholar and was a prominent athlete being a member of his college baseball club and football team. His last game of football was played at Cornell, Iowa, a few weeks before he left college. He was a most exemplary young man, his entire life being a comfort to his parents and relatives and an inspiration to the young men and young women with whom he came in contact. He was prominent in temperance work, being at the time of his death vice-president of the Iowa Catholic Total Abstinence Society. His family and friends predicted for him a brilliant career and a useful life, but God decreed otherwise and in the early dawn of his splendid manhood, he died in the house where he was born, surrounded in his last hours by loving relatives and friends. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, he was laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery at Dougherty, Iowa. The day was cold, but hundreds of friends were present at the last sad rites which consigned to earth the mortal remains of one whose beautiful life will long be cherished by those who knew him and loved him. Solemn High Mass was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. P.D. O'Reilly and a beautiful and consoling sermon was preached by Rev. D.M. Gorman D.D. President of St. Joseph's College, Dubuque. Other clergymen were present and assisting in the religious exercise were Rev. E.J. Dougherty, Mason City and Father Conney of Eldora, many other friends and relatives from Greene, Mason City, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and other cities present at the funeral.
