Clyde, 19, died in a fiery two-car crash 2.7 miles east of Hardy on Highway 8. Returning to Superior from Byron, Clyde was a passenger in a 1971 Plymouth driven by Michael D. Fenimore, 20 of Superior. According to reports the Fenimore car apparently had tire trouble and was slowing down when it was struck from the rear by a 1969 Chevrolet driven by Steve E. Higer, 18, also of Superior. Following the collision the Fenimore car left the road and crashed into a power pole before overturning and coming to rest in a pasture some 375 feet from the point of impact. Officers said the Fenimore car caught fire, apparently when the gasoline tank exploded. Other motorists were on the scene almost immediately after the accident and found both occupants trapped in the overturned and burning car. The Hardy Fire Department was called to the scene and the Nuckolls County Hospital alerted. The hospital in turn dispatched a rescue unit from Superior and summoned the emergency staff back to the hospital. The volunteers were able to free Fenimore from the burning car and rushed him to the Nuckolls County Hospital where he remains hospitalized with third degree burns over some 20 per cent of his body. Dr. Taylor reports Fenimore is now in satisfactory condition but he will remain hospitalized several weeks. The passengers in the other car owned by William Dixon were not seriously injured. They included the driver, Steve Higer, Franky E. Clyde, 18, a brother of Michael Clyde; Wesley D. Cassens, 23, and Richard K. Marshall, 18. All are from Superior. Nuckolls County authorities have charged Higer with felony motor vehicle homicide. Fenimore has been charged with driving with blood alcohol content in excess of 0.10 per cent. Funeral services for Michael Clyde, were held Saturday in the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marion Knoell officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. One of three children of Daryl Ellis and Carol Jean Darling Clyde, Michael Daryl Clyde was born at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital on Jully (sic) 23, 1956. He was raised in Bostwick and Superior and attended grade school at Bostwick. He was graduated from Superior High Schol, a member of the Class of 1974. He was baptised at the Guide Rock United Methodist Church on April 21, 1957, by Pastor C.F. Watters. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Ellis Clyde, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Darling. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Clyde; two brothers, Franky Ellis and Steven Duane of the home; his grandmother, Mrs. Ellis Clyde, Superior, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
