Reflctions of Grand River, Iowa 1881-1981 by Stacey McDowell Michael Foland, Jr. Family Michael Foland, Jr. (born 1820 in Rockingham Co., VA), son of Michael Foland, Sr., moved to Delaware Co., Ind. before 1840. He married in 1842 to Elizabeth Sourwine, born in 1822. A deed record in Decatur Co., Ia., shows that on Mar. 5, 1859, 140 acres in Richland Twp. were sold to Michael Foland by Sherm and Ruth Bowers of Delaware Co., Ind. for $200. Michael, his wife and seven children, then left Indiana with three horses, a covered wagon and a single rig, arriving in Decatur Co., Ia, Sept. 1859. They spent their first winter in a log cabin which they built near their 40 acres of timber. The next spring they moved to their farm in Richland Twp., where they had built a log house. This was their home until about 1880 when a new home was built, which was, at that time, one of the finest in the county. Today, 1980, it is owned and occupied by their grandson, Albert Foland. Michael died (1904) at age 84 years and Elizabeth (1896) at 76 years. They are buried in the Wheelis Cemetery. To this union ten children were born: Mary A. (1843-1920 m. James Bradshaw William H.
