Pastor Kay Reeb will officiate, and interment of the cremated remains will take place at a later date in Max. Michael George Walz was born May 24, 1961, to Martin and Twila (Lindquist) Walz of Max. He was the sixth of seven children. He was dealt a tough blow early in life, losing his mother at age 7 and his father at age 27. He was raised by his aunt Mimi. Mike attended school in Max, graduating high school in 1979. He played baseball, basketball and golf and was an avid trapper, hunter and fisherman. His favorite claim to fame was being the tallest kid on the basketball team... in sixth grade. After high school, Mike moved to Arizona to work and be with his brother, Wayne. He then returned to North Dakota, where he began his career with Hose and Rubber Supply. He continued to hunt with his beloved companion, his black lab, Annie. Fishing was his passion, as an original “Outlaw” and the first president of the Missouri River Anglers Association. Mike liked to experiment with cooking his game and became known for his signature recipes. In June of 1990, Mike was united in marriage to Laurie Riordan of San Diego, Calif. From this union came his greatest accomplishment, his beautiful Sarah and Jocelyn. Mike was an incredibly devoted father, spending hours on special projects with his girls. He prided himself on attending every game and competition the girls were involved in. A highlight of the family’s time together was the summertime at their cabin at Pouch Point. Most days were spent on the boat swimming and fishing. Mike’s passion for hunting and fishing was something he passed on to his daughter, Jocelyn. He developed an interest in rummaging and antiquing, which he shared with Sarah, for whom he always brought home his interesting finds. His love of cooking soon transferred from the meat he caught to the vegetables he grew. He became skilled at preparing salsa and jalapenos for neighbors and friends. Another pastime Mike enjoyed was playing pinochle with Grandma Luella. In recent years, Mike continued to cook, search for antiques and closely followed NASCAR races. Mike was a dear brother and friend, known for his compassion and big heart. Whether a stranger or a best friend, Mike would go out of his way to lend a hand to someone who needed it. The Missouri River Anglers Association made a tradition of providing gifts for children in need at the holidays. Mike spent countless hours volunteering for the organizations Sarah and Jocelyn were involved with. He was with his brother Wayne in his passing in 2005, which meant so much to his family. Surviving Mike are his daughters, Sarah Walz of Minneapolis and Jocelyn Walz of Williston; brothers, Randy Walz of Williston and Gene Walz of Velva; sisters, Patricia Walz of Minot, Corlis (Rick) Roedocker of Billings, Mont., and Roxanne (Tracy) Llewellyn of Williston; and 17 nieces and nephews. Preceding Mike in death were his parents; his aunt, Amelia “Mimi”; and his brother, Wayne. The Everson Funeral Home of Williston is caring for the family. Williston Herald Saturday, July 6, 2013
