Description	:	August 15, 2019 - After receiving a note from another findagrave member, I became aware that another memorial for a Michael Heckart buried in Oregon had been linked to Yost and Maria Heckart as their son, and two copies of the same photo of Michael that I received from Cindy Halcomb Wyant had been placed on that memorial. In checking ancestry.com, it appears that these two Michael Heckarts have also gotten mixed up on the family trees. Michael Heckart, son of Yost and Maria Heckart has a gravestone in this cemetery, and his mother, Maria Eva Heckart, and his two wives, Mary and Rosa, have stones here as well. As of 9:45 p.m. August 15, the links to Yost and Maria and one of the pictures has been removed. --------------- Article From “Ottumwa Weekly Democrat, Wednesday, February 6, 1889, Page 3: The Premium Record. Michael Heckart is a prosperous farmer of Green township in this county, and is now sixty-eight years of age. He delivered to Morrell & Co. yesterday 13 May pigs, all of one litter, which weighed on delivery at the packing house 3,700 pounds for which he received $4.40 per hundred. He also has on his farm another litter from the same brood sow, a fine litter of 10 pigs, which will average about 100 pounds each. He is the father of a very large family and is still hale and hearty, having one child but 3 years ago and a babe but 10 months of age. An enterprising business man of this city offers a premium of $5.00 to any young Wapello county farmer who will beat Mr. Heckart’s record all the way through, the payment to be made when the report is handed in to this office. Sarah stayed there even after her daughter had passed away and Michael had re-married. It was a large household. Michael and Mary Moyer Heckart had 10 children (my great-grandfather Joseph Elder was one of them); Michael and Rosa Backman Heckart would have 6 more. Michael's older brother Joseph was taken prisoner during the civil war and sent to Andersonville prison. His wife, Mary "Polly" Brashear Heckart, and her 7 children lived adjacent to Michael. When Joseph did not return from the war, Michael served as the patriarch for that family as well. His brother Henry was wounded, and later died from his injuries, during the battle of Lone Jack, near Lexington, MO. His wife died two weeks before he was wounded, leaving their 4 children without parents. Michael took in two of these children and his sister Lucy took in the other two."
