Brown and Henry Hughes. Interment was made in St. John's cemetery. Michael Hester was born in Williamburg, Ireland, on July 2, 1842, hence was 83 years old his last birthday. From Ireland he crossed the waters to Canada. When he came to the United States he located at Fond du Lac, Wis. From there he came to Iowa and located in Butler county near Greene. In 1885 he sold his farm there and came to this county. Locating on a farm in Emmetsburg township the family resided there until Mr. and Mrs. Hester retired and came to Emmetsburg 21 years ago. They established a home here and subsequently resided here. Mr. Hester united in marriage with Miss Mary O'Brien at Cedar Falls on Nov. 7, 1873. To this union three sons and three daughters were born. One son, Frank, died in 1912. The other children survive their parents. Mrs. Hester died in October, 1923. During the forty years that Mr. Hester lived in this county, there was an opportunity for very many to know him well, and among those who had business or social dealings with him there are none who will say a word against him. He was honorable and honest in his dealings. He was kind, courteous with everyone and helpful when his assistance was needed. The writer can recall many acts of kindness shown to her by Mr. Hester and his good wife, and with real appreciation we remember their hospitality. Mr. Hester was industrious, progressive and a good business man. He never even approached greed, but by earnest effort and wise economy he managed to accumulate sufficient means to provide one of the most comfortable and commodious homes for his wife and himself during their declining years. After Mrs. Hester died, Mr. Hester made his home with his daughter, Mrs. E.M. Thompson, where he had every care and comfort. Mr. Hester was one of the sturdy types of men, who riveted his attention upon the things that were his to do, and hence the offices of husband, father and citizen were correctly filled by him. He was a good Christian and a devout Catholic. He is survived by two sons, Ambrose of this place, and Leo Hester of Creston, and three daughters, Mrs. Lydia Thompson of this city, Mrs. Agnes Kelly of Jamestown, N. Mahan came down from Graettinger Wednesday to attend the funeral of Michael Hester. Mrs. Martin Laughlin of Graettinger attended the Michael Hester funeral at Emmetsburg Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Arnett of Fairmont, Minn., were here Wednesday to attend the funeral of Michael Hester. {Palo Alto Tribune, Emmetsburg, Iowa, Dec. 23, 1925) Before his death the late Michael Hester, realizing that the end was near, made out deeds for his sons and daughters to the property he intended to leave to them. His aim was to make them Christmas presents. Since his funeral the instruments have been recorded. Ambrose receives the home and buildings and Leo an eighty. Mrs. E.M. Thompson was given forty acres and Mrs. Martin Kelly of Jamestown, N.D., also a forty. Mrs. Reidy of Davenport, a third daughter, receives the home residence in this city. The cash on hand is, we understand, equitably divided among the five. Mr. Hester was thrifty and economical and he accumulated very substantial properties.
