He suffered a dislocated shoulder about a month ago. A son of the late Patrick and Mary (McEnroy) Welsh of Tunnelton, W Va, he came to Cumberland in the service of B & O about 53 years ago. He suffered a dislocated shoulder about a month ago. A son of the late Patrick and Mary (McEnroy) Welsh of Tunnelton, W Va, he came to Cumberland in the service of B & O about 53 years ago. His wife who preceded him in death was the former Margaret Ann Flanagan of Grafton, W. Va. He was the last member of the immediate family. Mr. Welsh retired about 12 years ago after having completed 55 years of service. His run was between Cumberland and Parkersburg. His brother, the late Charles J. Welsh, was also a B. and O. passenger conductor. He died in December, 1940. The two brothers had a total of 109 years with the railroad. He was a charter member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Trainmen; past president of the B. and O. Veterans; chief conductor of the Order of Railroad Conductors; charter member of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus; member of the Holy Name Society and the Catholic Knights of America; and of St. Patrick's Catholic church. He is survived by four sons, Chas. A., this city; James W., Oakland, Calif.; Thomas E., St. Louis. Mo.; and Robert J., Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Gertrude Sperry: 16 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Services will be conducted Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church." Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, Wed 2 Sep 1942: "SOLEMN REQUIEM MASS FOR MICHAEL J WELSH-Hundreds Assemble at St Patrick's Church for Funeral of Railroad Veteran-Solemn requiem high mass was celebrated at the funeral of Michael James Welsh, 85, retired Baltimore and Ohio passenger conductor, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, this morning, with a large assemblage of relatives and friends present. The veteran conductor, whose long years of service began in the old school era, the mannerisms of which he carried through his declining days, was known intimately by hundreds. This was evidenced by the constant stream of callers at the Welsh home on Harrison street. Many came from out of the city. The Rev. Francis J. McKeown was celebrant of the mass with the Rev. Charles W. Bogan, deacon, and the Rev. Thomas J. Hardesty, subdeacon. The Rev. Robert J. Kilgannon, pastor of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ridgeley, and the Rev. Robert E. Harmon, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Winchester, were in the sanctuary. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Father Hannon had the blessing at the grave. Long With Historic Road-Mr. Welsh's life was long-linked with the historic railroad, as was that of his brother, the late Charles J. Welsh, also a passenger conductor. They were always in high favor with the officials, despite the many changes in the management. The active pallbearers were Edward V., J. Howard, Donald J., Charles, John and Robert J. Welsh. The honorary pallbearers were Hice R. Laughlin, retired superintendent of the Cumberland division; Thomas J. Joyce, J. M. Yarnall, Thomas Murray, Patrick Coyle, John P. Schellhaus, William E. Yarnall, Henry Freeland, Walter Seel, Hugh Gatton, J. W. Peters. Patrick Cain arid Michael J. Fleming. The Baltimore and Ohio Veterans, of which Mr. Welsh was past president, were well represented among the honorary pallbearers. Among those attending were Thomas E. Welsh. St. Louis, a son; Thomas Murray, Parkersburg; Chas. E. Flanagan, Agnes Flanagan, Grafton; Mrs. Thomas Moran, Westernport; Mrs. Charles J. Bell, and Mrs William E Kelley, Mrs. Edward Prendergast, Piedmont and Thomas R McNamara, Philadelphia; Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Hopkins, Thomas J. Joyce, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Charles P. Welsh, Baltimore; Mr. and Mrs. Edward V. Welsh, Annapolis."
