June 6, 2014 at 10:12am Michael Joe Boxx was born to Kenneth and Geneiviev Harmon Boxx on August 24, 1948. Joe and his wife Nancy Burkhalter Boxx, have sons Kenny and Klint and daughters Tracey Boxx-Vass and Wendi Boxx. If you happened to be looking looking out your window during the wee hours of March 6, 2003 and saw a shooting star--it may have been the acsension of Ottumwa's Joe Boxx. He passed away at 4:34 a.m. from complications of kidney cancer. His daughter, Tracey Boxx-Vass told me that 54 years was not enough time. "He was a wonderful man to know." Soon after high school in the late 1960's the 19 year old man was drafted and soon whisked to Viet Nam where he served with the heralded infantry division the Big Red One, Charlie Division, Black Lion. Joe was one of the soldiers featured in a 1981 TV documentary CBS Reports: Bittersweet Memories, A Vietnam Reunion by Bill, Moyers. CBS hosted a reunion for members of Joe's battalion in Marathon, Florida in 1981. The gist of the prime time nationally televised documentary was to see how veterans and their families have adjusted to life after the war. Nancy Boxx, Joe's wife of over 30 years said Joe stayed out of the limelight and cameras and let others talk during the reunion. She said that Joe seldom spoke of the war's brutality with the family until he discovered he had cancer in 2002. Nancy said Joe was a machine gunner and took extra barrels into action because they warped after long hours of shooting. Joe's brother Jim Boxx, told me that Joe fought for his country and killed U.S. enemies, but it was ironic because his younger brother would rather work on a tractor growing up on the farm than hunt rabbits with him. Nancy said that Joe was able to find some happiness overseas. He made sure that children from surrounding villages were given treats and whatever food the men could muster to provide. Tracey said that her father had an affection for children. Nancy said that Joe died without pain and with the knowledge that the family was going to be all right because the two of them did a good job of raising the children. One of Joe's lasting honors to his family is that prior to his death he shared with them his grief over the war, a grief he had shouldered alone for so many years.
