My great uncle Walt Smith was a newspaper columnist and Mike was his first cousin. Here is what he wrote about Mike: "KANSAS NEWS An accidental death ended the career of one of Everton's (Missouri) ex-citizens, Mike Smith. He held the friendship with all he came in contact with. His jolly laugh was ever contagious. Blue Mondays were rare while Mike was around. He spent the days of his youth in Everton (Dade County), Missouri. The proof of his sunshine in Chanute, Kansas, his home, was more than manifested by the hundreds that attended his last sad rites. He and this writer were first cousins, but he seemed closer to me. He fell from an oil well drilling rig, from the mast, a distance of near forty feet. He, weighing over 200 pounds, lit on his feet breaking both legs and injuring him internally. The bleeding was too strong for him to stand while being brought to the Iola hospital and having to ride in a work truck over the 28 miles. One leg was amputated at the thigh, but done no good. One more has been added to our loved ones over yonder making the Book of Memories larger which is so sacred to us all. God saw best. He could see the knot of friendship tighten among the many friends and loved ones Mike had to leave at the young age of 49 years. Our sympathy pours out to his aged father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith of Chanute, Kansas; to his wife who could hardly stand the grief, the thought of a home just one to occupy it. May God bestow his blessing on Mike, his dear ones and all of you friends who read this. With a heart that has a double wound this year, we say farewell — Ellen and Mike and God bless the memories of you both.
