Mr. Meagher in his 24 years residence in Lead and employment with the Homestake company, has made a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. and the Homestake Veterans. He was born in Iowa, October 21, 1863. Besides a widow, he leave to mourn his death, four children by his first wife." Also included in the household at the time were four brothers and sisters - Johanna 16, James 13, John 11 and Margaret 9, all born in Iowa. The parents were both listed as having been born in Ireland. In 1880 the family was enumerated again in Washington, Buchanan County, Iowa, where Michael Meagher, age 17, was residing with his widowed mother Mary and brother James 22 and sister Maggie 19. This census states that James wa'ss born in New Jersey, while Maggie and Michael were born in Iowa.
