Mr. Gray was married to Miss Mary Beirn in 1866. During the year of 1866 they came to America, settling in New Haven, Conn., where they remained until 1869 when they came to Nebraska where he took a homestead near Ulysses where he passed away. The wife and mother died in 1872 at the early age of 22 years, leaving her husband and two small sons, Owen and Jerry, a little daughter having passed away when three days of age. Mr. Gray was married to Miss Mary Grant in 1876, who preceded him to the other world in 1916. One of the early pioneers who helped in clearing a smoother path for the future generation he was endowed with a brave and courageous nature whereby he overcame many difficulties which are a part of pioneer life. Was identified with the Catholic Church from the beginning, being the first member of the cemetery association at Ulysses, ever being proinnt [prominent] in church extension work, his purse always open for the cause of Christ and humanity. He was a devoted husband and an affectionate father. Following the death of his wife at Seward in 1916, where they had dwelt in a beautiful home since the year 1890, his health failed, when he came to near Ulysses and made his home with his son Owen until 13 months ago he went to stay with his son Jerry and family. Both families showered every attention upon the invalid, leaving nothing undone for his comfort. His past few years were marked by a gradual decline in strength which can be likened unto the wearing out of a clock, the vibrations of the pendulum slower, the ticking almost inaudible when suddenly, absolute silence reigns. Thus, was his going. The heartfelt sympathy of hosts of friends is tendered the bereaved ones. His funeral services were held at St. Mary's church Friday morning, Feb. 8, 1924, when a Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated for the repose of his soul, by his pastor, Rev. Fr. Loughran assisted by Fathers Loughnot of Seward and Cadek of David City, Fr. Loughran being the celebrant and rendering the sermon. The pall-bearers were: Wm. Coyle, Jacob Schneberger, Dan McGuinness, James Timoney, Jos. Geiger, and James Lambe. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery near town.
