When nine years of age, his father took them to Illinois, and in 1855 they moved to Missouri, finally coming to Kansas in 1857. His father, Henry Bowers, located on Section 28, Mill Creek Township, but moved onto Section 29 next year, 1858, Timber Hill Township, and in 1865 Mr. Bowers took 160 acres and started for himself, succeeding so well that he now has 885 acres in stock farm, having raised a good crop every year since starting. He handles about 350 cattle a year, buying, feeding, selling and raising enough corn to supply his stock. During the war he was Commissary Sergeant in the State militia. He was lovingly called "Uncle Mike" by many. In 1861 he married Miss Edwards. They have eight children. His father died in 1867, but his stepmother is still alive, aged sixty-five. Mr. Bowers is a member of the Masonic Lodge. Died: Michael Bowers, born 1835, Bourbon County pioneer in MillCreek township near Berlin. "Of noble character." Three sons, John, Will, Robert, five daughters Miss Samantha, Mrs. A. T. Duzan, Mrs. Joseph Holt, Mrs. D. E. Holt, Mrs. R. B. Holt. Buried Bronson. It is expected that remains of Mrs. Bowers and one daughter (that would be Emma) who passed away several years ago and were buried in Walnut Hill cemetery will be moved and placed by the side of husband and father. OBITUARY Early Settler at Rest Michael Bowers passed to rest Monday morning at the age of 84 years after years of suffering from heart trouble. Michael Bowers was born in Ohio, October 29, 1831. He moved to Kansas in 1857 and settled near Berlin, Bourbon County. Eleven years ago he moved to Bronson, where he spent his last days. Coming to the new country in those early days, he became a part of its interests, its struggles, its successes. Only those who have experienced the hardships and privations of those stern and rigorous days can testify to the real worth and influence of his life. For the most of us it is to admire his worth, take heart from his character and rejoice in his memory. On June 15, 1861 he was married to Mary E. Edwards, who, after 44 years of wedding life, preceded him 14 years ago to the great beyond. One child was called away 31 years go when 12 years of age. He leaves to mourn his departure, his daughters, Miss Samantha Ellen Bowers and Mrs. Nettie Duzan of Bronson. Mrs. Margaret Holt, Uniontown, Kansas, Mrs. Kate Holt of Wheeler, Texas, and Mrs. Maude Holt, Stonington, Colo.; his sons John and William of Bronson, and Robert of Ottumua, Iowa, as well as 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The death of Uncle Mike Bowers to his family and his interest in the lives of everyone, as well as his family, and his position had his _____honesty in every phase of ___were alike his characteristics. The funeral service was held at the home Wednesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. J. W. Williams of Ft. Scott. The Masons, of which Mr. Bowers was an honored member, attended in a body. The remains were laid to rest in the Bronson cemetery.
