They settled in Illinois, but came to Iowa. He was a step son of Patrick Griffin, and was united in marriage on April 22, 1867 to Hannah Collins at Waverly, Iowa. The 1870 US Census shows newly wed Michael and Hannah (Collins) O'Connell living with Hannah's parents Peter and Mary Collins. Michael's mother Honora and step-father, Pat Griffin live next door. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, and comrades from Frederika and Tripoli attended the funeral and acted as pall bearers. His sisters and the Shannon families of Fairbank, attended the funeral with the home relatives. Three sons from South Dakota (Peter, Frank and Edward) were unable to come, but had recently visited their father on account of his sickness. Mr. O’Connell was a highly esteemed citizen and neighbor, and for many years a resident of Le Roy township, of which he was one of the early settlers. A member of Pinhook Catholic church he was a man of pronounced religious convictions, and an exemplary Christian man who will be missed by kindred and neighbors. Burke of the Civil War Veterans and Adjutant Rundle of the American Legion, drove to Pin hook Cemetery and decorated the graves of the following Civil War Veterans: Patrick Burke, Tom Callahan, Philip Callahan, Michael O’Connell and Patrick O’Connell, five of the oldest soldiers in Bremer County. Philip Burke is the father of Colonel Burke. Children were; John (1867-1941), Peter (1869-1945), Frank (1873-1940), Edward (1875-1949) burial unknown, Thomas (1877-1948), Stephen (1878-1950), Lucy, Mrs. Bert Hagarty (1880-1971), Henry (1884-1974) and Nora, Mrs. Walter Damuth (1885-1974). Three children died in childhood, Willie, 5 Aug 1871-5 Aug 1875; George, 1 Jan 1883-3 Apr 1883 and Joseph, 2 Sep 1886-23 Sep 1886. Michael O'Connell's two mentioned sisters are: Bridget "Delia" (O'Connell), Mrs. William Scully and Margaret (Griffin), Mrs. Hugh Duffy. Margaret Duffy is his half-sister. The Shannon family is Mary (McCugh), Mrs. Archie Shannon, she is the daughter of Michael's sister, Mary (O'Connell), Mrs. Dan McCugh.
