A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Mike had worked for 11 ½ years at Lowenberg Bakery, and had also worked at Cargill in Eddyville and Excel in Ottumwa, Mary's Midway vending trailer and tended bar at the Eagle's. He married Virginia Guffey and they later divorced. A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Mike had worked for 11 ½ years at Lowenberg Bakery, and had also worked at Cargill in Eddyville and Excel in Ottumwa, Mary's Midway vending trailer and tended bar at the Eagle's. Mike was a dedicated member of the Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion firing squad. He helped with bingo at the Legion and V.F.W. and was a member and president of his A.A. chapter. Surviving are 2 sons, Michael (Melissa) Baxter Jr. and Jon Baxter both of Ottumwa; 2 step-children, Lacy Essary of Richland and Shawn Paulk of Ottumwa; grandchildren, Taytem, Alora, Clayton, Spencer, Ayren, Tyler, Dylan, Sydney, Raynann Syke; many cousins, and special companion, Rosanna Shafer. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Idella and Robert Black; a sister, Sue Guiter; a step-sister, Laura Laumeyer and step-son, Chad Guffey. His body has been cremated. Graveside services and inurnment will be 4 p.m. Friday at Shaul Cemetery with Doug McAntire officiating. Memorials may be made to Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
