Mike attended schools in Friend, Milford, Douglas and graduated from Malcolm High School with the class of 1971. He furthered his education at Fairbury Jr College, graduating with an Associate Degree in 1973. He also attended the University of Nebraska. Mike was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Karen Busboom, on August 31, 1973 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church near Lincoln. To this union four children were born, Nicole, Nathan, Deanna and Laura. Mike was a wonderful, kind husband, father and papa who always had a smile on his face. Together they built a home on an acreage west of Pawnee Lake and moved into Lincoln in 2014. Mike accepted Christ and was baptized in his youth. He was an active lifetime member of Beth-El Community Church. Mike served as an Elder, board member and was a Sunday School teacher. He also helped with Vacation Bible School's playground activities. Mike was a kid at heart and truly enjoyed working with the children. Mike worked with his father at Lee’s Rental until 1984. He then worked for the University of Nebraska and retired in 2014 after 27+ years as the buyer for the Chemistry Department. Mike loved sports and especially loved playing basketball, which he played well into his 50’s. Of course, from 3 point line to 3 point line at the end. He was active in the Malcolm Youth Sports Association and was a past president. He coached many youth in baseball, softball and basketball. He loved the kids and coaching. He once said, as much as he loved coaching, what really made him feel good was when one of those he coached 10 years later would come up to him and say "hi coach". Through the years, Mike broke and raised five generations of horses. He also raised several breeds of dogs, including German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Shih Tzu. He even had a pure bred Alaskan Timber Wolf. In his spare time, Mike was an avid hunter, hunting about anything he could. These were special times to enjoy with family and friends. He really enjoyed his hunting trips to Colorado to hunt elk and was successful twice. Mike was a Lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, National Rifle Association and a past member of Ducks Unlimited. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karen Cook, Lincoln, son, Nathan Cook, Angleton, TX, daughters, Nicole Cook, Lincoln, Laura Cook, Houston, TX, Deanna and Keith Eloi, Waverly, grandsons, Jaiven and Mason Eloi, mother, Donna Pearson, Seward, sisters and brother-in-law, Dixie Cook, Brighton, CO, Wendy and John Lohmeier, Lincoln, nieces and spouses, Tiffany and Kerwin Roth, Savannah Lohmeier and fiancé Elliott Engle, Sophie and Tim Ulibarri, Kendra and Josh Ketter, Brooke and Paul Goedert, nephew, Trenton Busboom, father-in-law, LeRoy Busboom, Lincoln, mother-in-law, Charlotte and Dean Oswald, Lincoln, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ken and Marilyn Busboom, Lincoln, JoAnn and Jon Eicher, Lincoln, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Hyle Cook, brother, Joseph, sister, Deanna, grandparents, Joseph Jantze, Verda and George Yeackley, Ernest and Ada Cook, nephews, Jacob Lohmeier and Sammy Eicher, step-father, Bud Pearson, step-father-in-law, Charles Bates, step-mother-in-law, Darlene Busboom.
