Mike as he was known to us all was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Roach and had just passed his 46th birthday on January 14. He was born and reared to manhood on the home farm here. Ten years ago last fall they sold the homestead and Mike accompanied by his sister Margaret moved to Minnesota but after a few years of residence there they sold out and came back to Iowa but Mike not being satisfied went to Missouri where he purchased a farm and last year he rented it to his brother Dave. Last November he came back to Ottumwa to visit, not enjoying the best of health but able to be up and around all the time. On Sunday evening last, only two days before his death he became seriously ill and he was at once taken to the hospital where medical aid and best of nursing was hoped would soon bring him back to health, but it was not to be for in less that 36 hours he was called to his Heavenly rest. Abscess on the liver was the direct cause of his death. His death came as a shock to his relatives and also the physicians and nurses, who little dreamed that death lurked so near. Mike was of a patient, uncomplaining manner and it seems cruel that he should be taken in the prime of life. He was intensely loyal, not a selfish thought in his mind, deed or action, not only loyal to his own friends but to all humanity. And when his life went out a great big heart teeming with love and charity for others, cease to beat. The following brothers and sisters are left to mourn his loss: Mrs. Mary McDermott, Kate McDavitt and Martin of Ottumwa, Ellen and Margaret of Pleasant Plain, John of Col?ett, Will of Beckwith, Tom of Albia and Dave of Vandalia, Mo., and a host of friends here. The remains were taken to Mt. Pleasant Friday morning on the Burlington train No. 18 accompanied by his relatives and friends and the last sad rites were held at St. Alphonse church conducted by Father Gaffney and preceded him to the Heavenly land he was tenderly laid to rest beside his loved father and mother who ?ome several years ago.
