Read More	Milbern Lee Christian obituary (on-line) YAKIMA - Milbern Lee Christian passed away in Yakima at Cedar Hills Adult Family Home on Saturday, October 29, 2005. He was born March 11, 1912 in Surgoinsville, Tennessee to Gale and Phoebe (Anderson) Christian. He was the 2nd of 6 children. He and his family moved to Ellensburg, Washington when he was 3. Mel told his children he never owned a pair of shoes until he rode the train West. He also ate his first banana on that trip. He was raised and educated in Ellensburg. He was the Greens Keeper at the golf course until he was drafted into the Army during WWII and began his tour of duty on April 15, 1942. He served in the Philippines, Korea, and Guadalcanal during his tour of duty. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the American Theatre Service medal. He received an Honorable Discharge on December 18, 1945. Upon returning to Ellensburg he became employed at Kelleher Motor Company and was employed there until age 88. He was their Body and Fender foreman, painter, and eventually, the maintenance person. Mel made many friends while working at Kelleher Motors, some of them who are still there. Later, Mel started his own janitorial service, which he continued until he moved to Yakima in 2003. He received Ellensburg's County Personality of the week on Friday, May 9, 1997. On August 8, 1951 he married Viola May Page Hicks in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. He inherited 3 children with this marriage, Merlyn, Richard and Ruth. In December 1952, Mel and Viola added a daughter, Polly to this family. Mel enjoyed fishing and camping with his family. He also enjoyed big family gatherings and having all of his grandchildren around him. Mel was active in the Grange receiving the 7th Degree, a lifetime member of the Ellensburg Moose Lodge, a member of the Legion Club and the Eagles Club. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother; and his wife Viola who passed away in 1995. He is survived by his children Merlyn Sheckler of Auburn, Richard (Linda) Hicks of Spokane, Ruth (Bob) Hamilton of Yakima, Polly Christian of Yakima, his brothers Dave (Fay) Christian and Edmund Christian of Ellensburg, his sisters-in-law Lois Page of Ellensburg, Grace Christian of Ephrata, 2 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 nephew, 2 nieces and a special friend Sarah Stevens of Ellensburg. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Cedar Hills Adult Family Home for the care they gave to Mel. Viewing will be from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday, November 4. and 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday November 5, at Steward & Williams Tribute Center. Graveside services will follow at 12 noon, Saturday, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Ellensburg. The family wishes to invite all of Mel's friends to a reception to follow the Graveside services at the Jazzercise building, 307 W. 1st Ave., Suite 1, Ellensburg.
