She, with her two sisters, Echo and Reva, played for a number of years on Wolbach's girls fast-pitch softball team, which was considered one of the better teams in Central Nebraska. Irene was proud of the no-hit, no-run game she pitched in 1938 against Greeley, and she continued to compete in the sport into her 40s. In 1946 they purchased the Wolbach, NE. Irene continued their publishing business after Tommy's death and was active in the business until her death. She received the Nebraska Press Association's Golden Pica Pole Award in 1996, honoring her for her 50 years in the newspaper profession.
