Mildred was born in White River, South Dakota on August 19, 1920 to Fred and Ethel (Hall) Trautman. She attended school in the O'Kreek and the Wood school districts. Harrison, 91, White River, SD passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Fairacres Manor in Greeley, CO. Mildred was born in White River, South Dakota on August 19, 1920 to Fred and Ethel (Hall) Trautman. She attended school in the O'Kreek and the Wood school districts. She graduated from the Wood High School in 1938. After graduation, she worked at the Max Frick Drug Store in Wood. In 1940, she and her sister, Marie, moved to Hoquiam, Washington to live with the John Hall family. They later returned to South Dakota, but when jobs became scarce in South Dakota, Mildred decided to move back to Washington. She, her sister Marie, along with Veldon Harrison, and Darrell Baker moved to Washington in the fall of 1941 to find work. There, both sisters worked in a restaurant in Hoquiam. She married Veldon Harrison in Hoquiam, Washington on February 9, 1942. When Veldon was called to serve in the military in 1942, Mildred decided to join the service as well. She enlisted in the WAAC on February 22, 1943 and was stationed in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and New Guinea. During her military career, she served as a switchboard operator and later prepared medical supplies for the soldiers overseas. She was honorably discharged from the military on March 23, 1945 receiving the Good Conduct Medal, WAAC Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, with one bronze star. She returned to Washington where son, Larry, was born. She stayed in Washington until Veldon was discharged from the service later that year. They then moved back to South Dakota and lived their life together on the Harrison ranch northeast of White River. Three more children were born, Beverly (deceased), Patti, and Peggy. When Veldon passed away in 1976, Mildred remained on the ranch. She loved her life in the country and took pride in her garden and yard. She enjoyed quilting, bowling, and square dancing. She was active in the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, White River Twirlers, White River Methodist Church, Riverview Extension Club, Eastern Star, and Rebekah Lodge. In 2009, she went to visit her daughter, Peggy, in Colorado. Due to declining health, she remained there until her death. She is survived by one son, Larry of White River; two daughters, Patti Stromer (Wayne) of White River and Peggy (Thomas) Honn of Ault, Colorado; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Orville (Muriel) Trautman of Kelso, Washington, and Kenneth (Cherlye) Trautman of Bay Center, Washington; sisters, Grace (William) Burke, Nora (Wayne) Calhoun, Betty McDougal, all of Montesano, Washington, and Luella (Jim) Lindley of Grapeview, Washington; brother-in-law, Raymond (Marjorie) Harrison of Martin, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Hazel Harrison of Spearfish, South Dakota. She is preceded in death by her husband, Veldon; daughter, Beverly Jean; granddaughter, Kristi Siegmund; parents, Fred and Ethel; brothers, Fritz, and Cliff; sisters, Marie, Loretta, and two in infancy. Donations may be made to the American Legion Post #94, White River, South Dakota. Funeral Tuesday October 4, 2011, 2:00 - p.m. at White River Methodist Church
